Appletree Adventure 2010....

What a great weekend we had!  Another Scouting event... this time it was the Appletree Family Camp Out with D's Cub Scout pack.   We went up to Nantahalla, NC on Friday-- late Friday, because I had to work...  We got there about midnight, and attempted to set up the tent quietly in the middle of the night.  We were successful in setting up the tent, but as for the quiet part.. not so much.   I'm sure that the other campers were silently cursing us...  Sorry...   It was extremely cold the first night-- temp got down to 29 degrees.  But we all made it through the night without freezing to death, so there is that.  Pixie and J came along for the trip, too.   So the 6 of us enjoyed a mini-vacation together.  That was nice.

Saturday, the weather was PERFECT!!!  The campsite was beautiful!!!  We went on a little hike by the river, then the kids spent the entire day playing and playing and playing...  The entire Pack was there with their parents and siblings, so there were plenty of adults to help watch the kids.   Very laid back and fun!  Little A and J went fishing for a while, all the kids climbed trees, waded through the stream, played Frisbee, and other games.  And just got plain filthy!!!  After all, as Pixie says, a dirty kid is a happy kid!!!  Poor Little A took a tumble into the water TWICE!!!   Definitely need to pack more changes of clothes next time...  D had a blast playing with all his Cub Scout friends.... he was so cute!!!  Saturday evening there was a big cookout, and each Den performed skits for the group!   Very Cute!!  The kids got a lesson on fire safety and experienced a "Flag Retiring" Ceremony.  Then, after dark, the Pack Leaders handed out glow sticks and all the kids were allowed to run around a big field trowing and swinging them!   It was really a beautiful site seeing all the purple and pink glow sticks moving  through the dark field!  It was like watching a fireworks show...  and the activity sufficiently exhausted the kids so that they were asleep almost before their heads hit the pillows!   It was such a peaceful and fun weekend....  VERY nice to get away from Atlanta for a couple of days.....

On Sunday, we packed up the campsite and headed towards Highlands for some site seeing and shopping.... The drive was beautiful!! I wish we had had time to stop at all the overlooks, but the boys had testing the next day, so we couldn't linger for too long... as it was we got back to reality all too soon.  Bleh.   I am already wanting to start planning our next adventure...  Ready for another vacation!!!  Packing for camping is A LOT of work, but getting away and experiencing the peace and quiet of nature makes it so worth it...  Next time, I just hope we can stay a few more days....
